A Maasai tribe gathers for a village meeting. Maasai society is strongly patriarchal in nature, with elder men, sometimes joined by retired elders, deciding most major matters for each Maasai group. A full body of oral law covers many aspects of behavior. Formal execution is unknown, and normally payment in cattle will settle matters. An out-of-court process is also practiced called ‘amitu’, ‘to make peace’, or ‘arop’, which involves a substantial apology.

Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Deadvlei is also written Deadvleior Dead Vlei, its name means “dead marsh” (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei, a lake or marsh in a valley between the dunes). The pan also is referred to as “Dooie Vlei” which is the (presumably original) fully Afrikaans name. Dead Vlei has been claimed to be surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 300–400 meters (350m on average, named “Big Daddy” or “Crazy Dune”), which rest on a sandstone terrace.

Vultures and ground hornbills feast on the body of a dead poached African elephant. Wildlife hunting is big business – a recent 2013 estimate valued the illegal poaching trade in Africa as being worth $17 billion dollars a year and growing. The African elephant is now on the path to extinction.

Uganda is known to have a favourable climate for tea growing. The Tea plant which was introduced in the country by 1900 had by mid 1950’s Tea become Uganda’s main estate crop.

The term San is commonly used to refer to a diverse group of hunter-gatherers living in Southern Africa who share historical and linguistic connections. The San were also referred to as Bushmen.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – is a large primeval forest located in south-western Uganda in the Kanungu District. The forest is on the edge of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 metres (3,806 to 8,553 ft). The forest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth, where more than half of the world’s population of the highly endangered mountain gorillas live in its jungles.

Uganda has had its problems with recent wars and health including aids. These issues has resulted in a large number of orphans. These young lads are quite happy playing with a tyre as a toy outside their orphanage in Bwindi.

The Darajani Market (or Bazaar) is also known as Estella Market. Here is the main meat market. Meat is sold to not just locals but hotels across the island. Hygiene here is not to a high standard with flies settling on the slaughtered animals and the venders tables dirty and dusty.

The Ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that is home to the most Mountain Gorillas found in the wild. It is also one of the most bio-diverse forests in Africa with one of the best ecosystems on the Continent. Due to its age, one can see plants and trees here, that are not found elsewhere.

After years of civil war, the Democratic Republic of Congo is a lawless wilderness bordering Uganda and Bwindi. The rangers from Uganda are brave and selfless men, risking their own lives to save mountain gorillas and other wildlife from poachers and land grabbers. The life of a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger is not easy and some pay the ultimate price for their service.

The Skeleton Coast is associated with shipwrecks, and stories of sailors walking through the desert in search of food and water. The name is derived from the bones that lined the beaches as a result of whaling operations and seal hunts. A few of the skeletons were human. This shot from the air is of the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen. It is 800 m inland from the sea and partially buried under the desert sand.
